Wellington
Auckland is the largest and most populated city in New Zealand with around 1.4 million people, about 30% of the country's population. Known as the 'City of Sails', Auckland has two busy harbours (one of which is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere) and the city is known for its love of boating.
Auckland has a wide range of activities, there really is something for all travellers here.
Things to do
-
Sky Tower
Auckland's most recognised landmark, the Sky Tower is one of the first stops for most travellers. The tower has a casino, a theatre, two restaurants (one of which revolves), a cafe and three separate observation decks at different heights.
This wouldn't be New Zealand if the Kiwis couldn't find some way to throw in a couple of adventure activities, and they heven't disappointed. The Sky Tower also has a bungee jump and a 'SkyWalk', where you can walk on the outside rim of the tower (safely strapped up of course!).

Dormant Volcanic fields
Auckland has plenty of volcanoes, around 50, thankfully dormant, and some are even filled with water. So worry not about your safety as the last one to erupt was about 600 years ago. These volcanic peaks offer spectacular views of Auckland and it's beautiful harbours (the background image was taken from Mount Eden). Two of the most popular peaks are Mount Eden and One Tree Hill. There are also guided tours available.

Accommodation
We stayed at City Lodge
City Lodge is more of a budget hotel than a hostel. It is located about 20 minutes walk from the centre of town. Rooms are clean and come with an en-suite toilet/shower. They also have a TV and a kettle with a few free tea/coffee sachets and a fridge. There is a large communal kitchen/TV room and laundrette on the basement floor. This hostel is ideal for travellers who want to keep to themselves, on the other hand though, it could be a bit lonely for single travellers looking to make friends. We would stay here again due to the clean facilities.
