Kaikoura is a small town with a population of about 3000 people. The town is famous for its abundant marine life, the word 'Kaikoura' is Maori for 'meal of crayfish' and the region is still well known for its crayfish. Kaikoura has very beautiful surroundings, it is located next to the Pacific Ocean and close to the Kaikoura Mountain Ranges which is part of the Southern Alps.

Kaikoura is a very relaxed town and an ideal place to spend a few days recharging. The scenery provides a peaceful setting and the small size of the town adds to its isolated feel.

For travellers who seafood, this is also the ideal place to taste some of the freshest fish New Zealand has to offer.

Accommodation

We stayed at Dolphin Lodge Backpackers. This is a small hostel with clean, basic facilities. The kitchen is a good size and the outdoor patio area has a nice seating area with a good view of the mountains. The bathrooms are a little small for the potential number of guests but this intimate hostel has enough to keep you comfortable for at least a few days. Mountain bike hire is a nice extra since it makes it easy to explore Kaikoura, another nice extra was the ocean view from our room.
