Taupo is a town located on the shore of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake (it’s bigger than Singapore). The town feels similar to the nearby city of Rotorua. Taupo has a population of about 22,000 but the town feels quite small and sleepy.

Lake Taupo was a massive super-volcano that last erupted in AD 186. The eruption was so strong that red skies caused by the ash and crop yield shortages were reported in China and Rome.

Taupo is a small friendly town and a good place to spend a few days.

Things to do

We did the high wire course while in Taupo. We really recommend it, it’s better if there are an even number of people so that one person can hold the safety rope while the other tackles the obstacles, but how much do you really trust your friend? The Giant Trapeze and the Giant Swing were our favourites.

Accommodation

We stayed at Tiki Lodge. It’s a nice hostel that feels new but has character. The owners are helpful and friendly. Rooms and communal areas are clean and there is a balcony off the kitchen that has great views of Lake Taupo. We enjoyed our time here and would stay again.
