Mount Maunganui is a seaside resort town which sits under an extinct volcanic cone of the same name (it is now officially known by its Maori name, Mauao). The Mount, as it’s locally known, is famous for its surf and swimming beaches and is the first place in New Zealand to have an artificial reef installed. The reef creates bigger, more consistent waves throughout the year.

Mount Maunganui is a great place to relax for a couple of days, especially if you take advantage of its long stretch of beach.

Things to do

There are not many adventure activities in Mount Maunganui, the focus of the town is the beautiful beach and relaxation. There are some nice cafes and restaurants close to the beach and the mountain.

Accommodation

We stayed at Pacific Coast Lodge and Backpackers. This was a really good hostel, we have never felt so special after only booking a double room (there were even sweets on the pillow). The room was spacious and had a sink. The communal kitchen was very large and both the kitchen and the bathrooms were clean. The hostel is located about 30 minutes walk from the mountain and about 15 minutes from the beach.
