Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s major natural tourist attractions. It is an area where deep valleys have been carved into the surrounding mountains by glacial activity. Boat tours operate regularly and can last from an hour up to a whole day.
Lots of tours operators include a pick up and drop off service from nearby Queenstown.

We travelled here from Queenstown on a day trip. Most of the day was spent travelling between Queenstown and Milford Sound but there was a lot to see in between and we stopped at places of interest (such as some Mirror Lakes). Milford Sound itself has a mystique about it.
When we arrived it was cloudy and raining but only added to the atmosphere. The way the mist and clouds just hung, clinging onto the mountains was very atmospheric and a little eerie.
Then suddenly the clouds parted and brilliant sunshine shone through. It completely changed the feel of the Sound and the increased visibility meant we could now see more waterfalls and even some seals. This is one of the most beautiful and unique areas of New Zealand and something travellers should not miss.
