Even though Greymouth is the largest town of the West Coast region, it is still very small with a population of about 10,000. Unlike other small towns in New Zealand, there isn’t too much to do here. Most of the travellers we met were just using it as an overnight stop.
Things to do
One of the few activities here is off-road quad biking/go karting. This is messy business so if you go, be prepared to get muddy.
Another activity is a tour of the local Monteith’s Brewery, which includes beer tastings.
Accommodation
We stayed at Noah’s Ark Backpackers. The hostel is a large converted house and still has some of its original features. Each room has a different animal theme, a few being the tiger room, elephant room and the dog room. The kitchen is an okay size and the bathrooms are kept clean, although they can be difficult to find at first as they are scattered throughout the house.
The hostel is starting to get a little worn and feels a bit tatty. If the owners spent a bit of time on neatening up the rough edges, this hostel would be quite cosy.
